This Sunday, March 10th, is the beginning of Daylight Savings Time. Don’t forget to set your clocks an hour forward, in the case that they don’t do so automatically like many of our smartphones do. Did you know that there are both financial and economic benefits of DST? Last year, when Daylight Savings Time ended, Decoded Science laid out the values of this time adjustment.
As individuals, we save money during DST by gaining natural light, spending less heating and lighting our homes and places of work. Also, studies show that peoples’ electric bill drops dramatically during this time period. Why? The answer is obvious! People are less likely to spend their time watching excess television and more likely to spend leisure time outdoors. In addition, many businesses thrive during the spring, summer and fall because they provide outdoor seating, giving our economy a boost! Lastly, more hours of daylight often equate to less crime as well as fewer accidents while driving.
